Dentist Questions Periodontal Disease

What should I expect from my first periodontist visit?

My dentist referred me to a periodontist after I complained about chronic bad breath. He wants to make sure that I don't have any periodontal disease. Is there anything that I should expect during my first visit?

I would expect there to be a full examination. At this appointment radiographs are taken or viewed, charting is completed, and the periodontist will evaluate your periodontal health through a method known as probing. Although this can be slightly uncomfortable, the information gained is extremely valuable in determining if disease is present or if a certain type of cleaning is required or not.
You should expect an examination and consultation. I am surprised that your dentist did not check for periodontal disease. It's pretty easy to find.
