For recurrent or complicated diverticulitis, the section of colon where the problem is occurring will be resected during surgery. This gets rid of the segment where the diverticulum was getting inflamed. The sigmoid is by far the most common site that requires surgical resection.
Google, You Tube and Wikipedia. Normally, bowel resection.
No treatment needed unless perforated. Bowel resection, then treatment.
Many times the procedure can be done via a minimally invasive approach with small incisions, a camera, and long instruments. The diseased portion of the colon, typically the sigmoid colon, is removed. if you have active infection or an abscess, a colostomy may be needed. Most times, the surgeon will try to connect the colon back to itself so that the GI tract is whole. If a colostomy is needed, it can be reconnected in about 3-6 months.
Resection of the affected length of bowel with anastomosis is the best option. Sometimes that would require a colostomy.
