There was drizzling rain outside. The time was already past midnight. My husband and children were sound asleep. It was a rest to have a moment of peace of mind so that I could put the big piles of papers on my desk in order, and take care of the ever-increasing miscellaneous affairs. Suddenly, I discovered a faded, yellowing torn diary, in which a “will” of my husband made before marriage, was inserted. Immediately, my peaceful mind was deeply disturbed. The roaring waves of anxiety pounded on my head.
Many years ago, for the purpose of developing my medical background, I left Taiwan for Germany, Switzerland, and France. I strolled along the Seine River. My shadow fell on the Rhine River. The last stop of my younger years' dream was at the Potomac River in Washington, D.C. USA, where I met my lover quite unexpectedly, he is the better half of my life.
From the torn diary, all the past events loomed before my eyes. When I first met my husband, he was already sick. At the time of our engagement, he was diagnosed as having “terminal” and could live three months at the most. This was like a thunderclap from a blue sky. Any girl in my place would have distanced herself from him. Almost every day, I got advice, persuasion, scorn, and disdain from my relatives and friends. They warned that a person with terminal cancer is just like looking for the end of the journey from this world. What a waste of one’s future career and life. All these opinions are common to human beings.
The primary motive of my determination to many my fiancé was a good person. Also, he had the special achievement of oriental culture. His prize book is a copy of the 96th U.S., Congressional Hearing Record which includes the brilliant defense of acupuncture before the ”House of Representatives“; this is the most important record in the U.S. Congress for Acupuncture.
(Dr. Yeh Chong Chan, U.S. Congressional Hearing Record 1979) Combined with different activities, his contribution and services have a significant impact on the acupuncture development in this Country; he should deserve part of the credits from the Acupuncture History in the U.S. I strongly felt that this kind of person should live a full span of life in order to become a splendid rode mode for his profession.
When the twenty-one doctors determined that my fiancé had only three months to live. I did not have a feeling of disappointment and fear. In my many years of medical practice at that time, all the people I had contacted suffered serious diseases and struggled in despair and pain. Because of my experience, I did not believe that my fiancé would die. Nevertheless, I predicted that I would encounter year's sadness and happiness.
The Ultimate Pain Facing Imminent Death
In those years, I remembered that my husband felt constant abdominal pain and persistent high fever. Complete physical check-ups did not reveal the cause of the discomfort. Not until they cut open the abdomen, examined the intestine, and performed a biopsy, that the doctors determine that it was “last–stage lymphatic cancer”. His biggest malignant tumor (20x20 cm) was excised in the hospital. There were eighteen malignant tumors spread all over his body. Due to continuous bleeding, there was no way to remove every one of them. In addition, the 16-inches small intestine was also affected. The three months life span was imminent. It was then, my fiancé wrote his will in the hospital, now, when I recall these happenings, my memory is still vivid. Through it has been more than 37 years. I still have a tearful feeling.
He stayed in the hospital from March, 17 to the middle of May 1984, a total of 59 days of hospitalization. His bodyweight dropped from 140 lbs. to 91 lbs. for a man which a height of 5 feet 8 inches, he was really emaciated through that was persisted high fever, the unbearable abdominal pain. He thought that even if it was not cancer, but all severe symptoms would lead to his death. Basically, a man with 91 lbs. body-weight could not maintain the normal activity of a human body; I recognized that his condition did not look good. I obtained the tacit concert of the hospital to move the hospital ward to take care of him with all my effort. Since I was working in the medical field for a long time, I believed that if I took care of a patient wholeheartedly, it was possible to get twice the result with half the effort.
So far as the disease of last stage cancer is concerned, the hospital and the doctors can only fulfill their duty and submit to the will of God. Because of the development of high fever, the chemotherapy usually was out. However, since this was an incurable disease, the doctors wanted to take the risk of giving chemotherapy a try, hoping to give my lover a slim chance of survival.
During the first and second rounds of chemotherapy, he did not feel anything, but the third time it was extremely painful. He had a stuffy chest, dizziness, difficulty breathing, additionally, he was vomiting 19 times at night. In the fourth round, the doctors decided to add antiemetic medicine to the drug, hoping to ease the vomiting. But three minutes later during the therapy, he suddenly felt a strong convulsive contraction of his heart, difficult breathing, and severe pain. These systems are exactly an indication of shock, heart attack in the oncology office as a result, then I immediately disconnected the dripping apparatus and adjusted deep breathing therapy, CPR, and I observed twenty minutes, he finally recovered.
I was acting as a doctor, nurse, as well as a member of the family to perform first aid skills to my lover immediately. Generally speaking, my duty was against the doctor’s office policy, however, all doctors and nurses were very happy about my professional performance, the doctors appreciated it very much because they trusted my medical experience and clinical skills. Also, they did not want a person to die in their office. After this, I could say that I had a lingering fear; we were disappointed with the treatment in the hospital. The doctors did not know what to do, so we decided to go home to rest and tried to make some other plan.
In the face of these ordeals, my finance that had learned martial arts when he was young had a strong desire for life. In the meantime, he believed that the human life span can be more than one hundred years. Depending on this kind of faith and strong will, we used treatments such as acupuncture, chi-going, nature herbs diet, vitamins and good habits like arts, calligraphy and completely change lifestyle. The life-and-death period of six months passed. His body felt renewed. After one year, he was completely recovered. The past events now are more than 37 years, seem like yesterday, almost same as waking up from a bad dream.
Reflections of the Anti-Cancer Success
For me, helping my husband combat cancer was very difficult. Of course, his personal will and perseverance were the main factors. It also proves that my choice in my early years was correct. Now, my relatives and friends praise my determination.
More than 37 years have passed, my husband is now in perfect health and enjoys his work also, he takes time to focus on lifetime achievements, award-winning papers, books, and healing arts in an effort to bring many issues into existence. It is entirely out of people’s expectations. The medical friends and the hospital considered this case is a miracle. In different conferences, we have presented many special reports to medical professions. We also did advanced researches. People have said that I deserve a lot of credit for helping him to combat cancer. I think that we are in the wake of an unfortunate incident.
We went through thick and thin in the course of time and stepped everywhere on the difficult human road. Looking back, I gradually realize the real value of human life. It is only through continuous struggle and constant striving to improve oneself. That hopes flourishes in this world.
