Hello there,

Root planning and scaling is a treatment done specifically when there is periodontal disease (loss of bone, inflammation, bleeding, or pocket depth of more than 4mm). After this treatment, there needs to be a maintenance program set in place for the patient or recare as we call it every 3-4 months. When a patient doesn’t maintain the treatment, then he/she will fall back to the initial diagnoses. So, regular visits are crucial for any treatment to have a great and healthy outcome.
Every 3-4 months
Scaling is done on a needs basis and that varies for person to person. With better home care, it may never be repeated, and sometimes it is necessary every 3 months. Consult with your dentist to determine what is best for your oral health.
I hope this is helpful for you.
At your age, why are you having deep scaling? Deep scaling is when there is bone loss and pockets formed around the teeth. Periodontal Disease happens later in life usually. However, if you are not brushing and flossing properly and have a lot of tarter built up, then your dentist need to do scaling to get the gums into a healthy state. You can maintain that healthy state and never need another deep scaling OR, if you don’t brush properly, need scaling once a month at least. It all depends on how well you maintain your mouth.

SRP should be done every 2 years.
If you have periodontal disease and a lot of inflammation, tartar, plaque, you should be seen every 3-4 months until your condition is stable. Scaling and root planing is not done in the absence of periodontal disease. If your mouth is healthy or even if you have mild gingivitis, regular cleaning (prophylaxis) should be sufficient treatment every 6 months.
