Hello,

If a spinal is performed in a proper manner by a trained professional, it should not create any issues with back pain. Spinals are the safest anesthetic for a pregnant mother and child. The principal of a spinal is to insert a very thin needle into a space that contains fluid which surrounds the spinal nerves and deposit a small amount of local anesthetic. The greatest risk is a spinal headache which is minimized by using a small tapered needle.

Congratulations and best of luck.

Hello,

This is a very difficult question to answer because it is so broad based. The answer to whether anesthesia can cause “any” side effect is yes because all medications cause side effects. If you take aspirin it causes an increase risk of bleeding, Tylenol increases risk of liver damage. Depending on the type of prostate surgery, his anesthetic will be custom taylored to his care and if he has any medical conditions, this will impact his care. There are many anesthetic agents and variations of care. General anesthesia can cause drowsiness, sore throat, nausea, etc.. Spinals can result in temporary numbness, and soreness in the back, it lowers blood pressure, etc. I’m sorry I cannot give you a specific answer because the answer depends on what type of prostate surgery he is having and if he has any other medical issues.

Hello,

Spinals are administered usually with the use of a very fine and tapered needle where local anesthetic is deposited into the space containing the fluid surrounding the spinal nerves. Its effects are temporary and usually resolve without any problems. It is not obvious to me or am I aware of any mechanism by which a spinal injection could result in back pain 2 years later. I would believe that there may be a different cause.

Hello,

A blood patch procedure is used to stop fluid from leaking from inside the spinal canal. That part of the body is built like a bicycle tire. When the inner tube portion or the dura is punctured, fluid leaks and causes a headache when sitting or standing. A blood patch is performed by introducing a needle that enters the space just outside the inner tube, the epidural space. A person’s own blood is introduced into this space. The blood clots over the hole and prevents any further leakage. I cannot see how this procedure can be related to the tail bone. The epidural space does not extend that far down. It ends in the sacral region. I do not know if you had such a severe leak that it extended that far down, or so much fluid was injected that it extended that much. That bump should be monitored until it resolves.

Anesthesia in the appropriate setting by a trained professional is safe. I would recommend the next few steps to allay your fears.

1) Is your surgery performed by a surgeon who routinely does these procedures and how many do they do a year?
2) the anesthesia should be provided by a board certified anesthesiologist who does these on regular basis.
3) I also recommend that you call the anesthesia department and speak to the anesthesiologist that will perform your anesthesia. This way your concerns can be addressed and will help with your fears.

Good luck with your surgery.
