Does a rhinoplasty have a long recovery time?
The cast will remain for approximately one week. Bruising and swelling around the eyes can last two weeks. Most activities can be resumed by 3 to 4 weeks. A lot depends on how you want to be seen. If you want to look good you may need a minimum of 2 to 3 weeks. However if looks are not a concern many people go back to school and back to sedentary desk jobs even with the cast on after a few days. READ MORE
How do you get rid of a nose bump without surgery?
There is no way to get rid of a nose hub without surgery. One can camouflage the prominence of a nose hump by injecting filler above and or below it. However, this makes the nose bigger and often eliminates the indentation between the forehead and the nose, rendering the nose like a Greek or Roman statue, with an inadequate indentation between the forehead and nose. This is a very masculine look and is rather inappropriate for a woman. A really pretty nose on a woman begins between the eyes with a fairly deep indentation between the forehead and the upper portion of the nose called the glabella notch. Filler injections to the nose can also be dangerous because the filler can be inadvertently injected into an artery in the skin of the nose, which could cause permanent loss of a large patch of skin from the nose, which would be a cosmetic disaster. There are some plastic surgeons who have judiciously used fillers in the nose, but I have avoided this modality particularly for bumps. As a filler, it is used more appropriately to enlarge or fill. Therefore, to fill in a tiny dent or add prominence to an inadequately projecting tip makes more sense. Thank you for your inquiry. Regards, Robert Ciardullo, MD READ MORE
How long does pain from rhinoplasty last?
Surprisingly, most patients say that there really is no significant pain following a standard rhinoplasty. Nine out of 10 of my patients say they either never took the pain medication or only took it the first day. Most say that the discomfort is stuffiness and some aching, but only one out of 10 says that it is painful. I do a closed rhinoplasty procedure which is less invasive than an open procedure. This could account in part for the minimal pain and swelling that usually follow closed rhinoplasty. If one has septal work, there would be a packing which introduces additional discomfort in the form of stuffiness and perhaps some additional pain. But after 30 years and approximately 3,000 rhinoplasties, I can honestly say that the majority of patients are surprised at the lack of pain following a routine rhinoplasty. Thank you for your question. Regards, Robert Ciardullo, MD READ MORE
How long after rhinoplasty can you get revision?
This depends on the part of the nose that needs revising. The tip of the nose takes the longest to heal and most revision surgery for the tip should be done after approximately one year. Revisions involving for the reduction of the bridge could perhaps be done a little sooner for example 9 months. There are many factors that determine the optimum time such as the thickness of the skin, the amount of scar tissue, and the age of the patient. But as a general rule, one year is a fairly safe time for most people, and since you are only 31 years old, and heal rather quickly, one year should be more than adequate for you. How do I take care of my nose after a rhinoplasty?
Postoperative care after rhinoplasty usually consists of sleeping with the back of the bed elevated for approximately one week, applying cold compresses intermittently to the eyes for the first 48 hours, and avoiding strenuous activity and excessive leaning forward for approximately three weeks. Also, contact sports should be avoided for approximately three weeks. Intense sun on the nose should be avoided and sunscreen should be worn for approximately two months. Care should also be taken not to let one's glasses dig into the bridge of the nose for prolonged periods of time during the first month or so after surgery. Beyond that, the postoperative care is not as complicated as people think. Many of my patients return to school or to desk jobs after three or four days even with their cast still on. The nose is not that fragile with the cast on, and by the end of a week or so when the cast is removed, there is a surprising amount of strength to the nasal bones, unlike an extremity fracture, which takes six weeks to get strength. Most people are also surprised that the pain was significantly less than they expected. Thank you for your inquiry. Sincerely, Robert Ciardullo, MD READ MORE
When can I wash my face after nose surgery?
Following rhinoplasty, you will have a cast on your nose, which generally stays for one week. This cast should be kept dry. You can wash your hair backwards in the sink if you like, and you can wash around the rest of your face with a washcloth if you like, however, the cast itself must be kept dry, which means bath from the neck down or hand held shower from the neck down. Thank you for your inquiry. Sincerely, Robert Ciardullo, MD READ MORE
Can under eye bags be removed?
Yes, quite simply. The procedure is called lower eyelid plasty or lower eyelid blepharoplasty. There are three fat pads in each lower eyelid, and these can be surgically removed. Bags are generally inherited and can be present quite early in life. I once performed a lower eyelid plasty for a prominent bags in an 18-year-old young man. The good thing about the surgery is that the fat, once removed, is usually gone permanently. Sincerely, Robert Ciardullo, MD READ MORE

Do nose jobs hurt for weeks?
Surprisingly most patients say that rhinoplasty surgery is relatively painless. Nine out of 10 patients tell me that they did not take their pain med at all or they only took it the first day then not after that. One would expect that it would be painful but apparently most patients find that it is not. There is some stuffiness and some discomfort to be sure. There is more discomfort if septal work is done and a packing is used. But in a straightforward rhinoplasty without a packing 90% of patients say that it is not painful READ MORE

Is nose plastic surgery safe?
Dear patient, rhinoplasty is a very safe operation particularly in healthy young people. While not every patient who has a rhinoplasty is 100% satisfied with the cosmetic result, the incidence of complications during and after surgery is extremely low. I have been doing rhinoplasty for over 30 years and have performed approximately 3000 rhinoplasties. Based on this experience I could say that the incidence of complications is extremely low and the percentage of patients who are delighted with the results and glad they had the surgery is extremely high. I hope this helps you in making your decision. Sincerely, Dr. Ciardullo READ MORE

Is a nose job painful?
Hi, Remarkably, about 90% of people undergoing simple rhinoplasty claim that it is not painful. I routinely prescribe a strong pain medication in case it is needed, but approximately 90% of people say they never took it or only took it the first day. When septal work is performed for a deviated septum, there usually is a packing which does involve more discomfort, usually extreme stuffiness. In some of those cases the patients will often say there was some element of pain. But with routine rhinoplasty, it is surprising that the majority of patients say that it is not painful at all or very minimally so. I hope this helps you with your decision. Should I get a second opinion before plastic surgery?
Hi. There are certain norms that most plastic surgeons like to adhere to in terms of female aesthetics in western culture. It is your nose and you will be living with it for the rest of your life. Therefore you should be happy with what you get. You should be on the same page with your plastic surgeon. If what you are seeking is reasonable you should get as close to it as possible with what you have to start with. If on the other hand you are seeking something unusual a good plastic surgeon will not want to do that. It will depend On what you are looking for. A second opinion would probably be very helpful.
