The Origins of Whomus
This summary introduces the prelude to the story of Whomus in the Garden of Uter, the subject of a short science fiction novel I recently authored. I am a clinician dealing with issues related to the beginning of life and have been fascinated by the processes leading to the birth of a human being....
The Phenomenon of Pregnancy Fatigue
Recently, one of my patients walked into my office at a much slower pace than she is used to, and with a look on her face of being concerned about an issue she is ready to bring up in our upcoming conversation. She was two weeks away from her planned delivery, a common occurrence with patients whose...
The ABCs of Human Pregnancy
Whether one considers the preteen young girl or the mature woman in her fifties, a pregnancy with the goal of delivery of a healthy infant is a physiologic state. It means that, as a normal process, pregnancy should be welcomed as a life's event, similar to the daily cardiovascular, respiratory,...
Is a TSH value of 3.17 normal in 9 months of pregnancy?
This is a technical question which your obstetrician will answer. The number is meaningless without the unit associated with it. Only your care provider is in a position to advise you on whether you should be concerned in relation to a test he/she has ordered. Good luck and have a safe delivery! READ MORE
How popular are water births?
Not so popular, and I have no experience in it. Not advisable for pregnancy at risk of complication. A hospital is the safest choice, in my opinion. READ MORE
Is my constipation normal?
This could well be hormonal, especially if it occurs at the same time in relation to your menstrual cycle. READ MORE
Ovulation pain
This occurrence varies from woman to woman and may be just typical of your individual experience. If your GYN check up is normal, there is nothing to do about it except for a light pain medication your doctor can prescribe. READ MORE
What could be the reason behind sudden pain around my right ovary?
Please consult your gynecologist as this could be an ovarian cyst. READ MORE
If my pregnancy test is negative, why are my periods delayed?
There may be many reasons for an occasional delay in menses without a pregnancy. A repeat pregnancy test may be warranted, but a visit to your gynecologist is recommended if this delay persists or recurs. READ MORE
Is it periods or implantation bleeding?
A delayed menstrual flow with pelvic pain is not normal. You should see a gynecologist for evaluation. A serum (blood) pregnancy test is recommended. READ MORE
I am having severe itching in my vagina. Could it be a UTI?
This is more likely a sign of inflammation of the vulva/vagina possibly due to infection. A bladder infection would likely be associated with pelvic discomfort, frequent urination with burning sensation during urination. READ MORE
How can I differentiate between implantation bleeding and periods?
Implantation bleeding is usually very light and short lived and would occur several days before your menses (if you have regular cycle). Otherwise, it is difficult to be certain. Additional tests would be necessary to differentiate between the two. READ MORE
What is the meaning of having negative T-scores?
Please have your gynecologist define the T-score as it could mean different things. READ MORE
Are there home remedies to treat vaginal yeast infection?
Home remedies are not part of my medical practice. You may find other practitioners experienced in home remedies. READ MORE
I am suffering from either hemorrhoids or anal skin flap. How can I know the difference?
Please refer to a gastroenterologist for an answer to this question. READ MORE
Every time I get my period, on the second day I feel like I am going to pass out. Why does this happen?
You may be very sensitive to the hormonal changes of that time in your cycle, but you need to ensure you are not anemic. See a gynecologist for an evaluation. READ MORE
I have PCOD. What are my chances of conceiving?
It can be a challenge, but it's possible. Continue to see your gynecologist for management of your periodic menstrual flow and to help you conceive. You may need the help of a reproductive endocrinologist (Infertility Subspecialist!) READ MORE
I have missed my periods. Should I immediately meet a gynecologist?
Pregnancy is possible. See your gynecologist as soon as possible. READ MORE
I am having frequent bouts of fungal infection in my vaginal region. What should I do?
Your general state of health accounts for your ability to fight and prevent infection. Make sure you are in good general health. If you are taking birth control pills, are diabetic or pregnant, you may be predisposed to yeast infections. Other debilitating illnesses could be additional predisposing factors. READ MORE
Could emotions cause milky nipple discharge?
Yes, it could be something else. See a gynecologist and he/she will examine you and test for possible hormonal causes. READ MORE
Are hot flashes during urination normal?
If this persists, you need to see a gynecologist who will evaluate you to make sure you do not have a bladder infection or inflammation. READ MORE
What causes cramps during pregnancy?
It could be a serious symptom of preterm labor. Please consult your provider of prenatal care or go to the nearest hospital for evaluation. READ MORE
